How To Understand Unconscious Bias
Most of us would agree that people are an organisation's greatest strength. So why then do we still see examples of inequality and discrimination in the 21st Century? Here’s where we explore the phenomenon of the brain’s biases and what we can do to overcome them to maximise both gender and cognitive diversity.
Following this face-to-face workshop you will be able to:
- Confidently explain the difference between reflective and reflexive thoughts
- List 3 different types of unconscious bias
- Understand and describe a range of micro messages
- Identify and apply a number of strategies to overcome the negative impact of unconscious bias
Face-to-Face Workshop Content
We start by highlighting the two minds we all have and how these play a big part in the way we think and therefore act with others, how this aligns with gender and other biases and how to check ourselves when biases form. We then consider the do’s and don’ts to overcome negative impacts of our unintentional behaviours. Finally, you will have the opportunity to test your own biases and produce a short plan of action to identify your next steps.
"While we have to take personal responsibility for our actions, I have a great deal of empathy for people who are unconsciously racially biased, and indeed count myself among their number."
John Barnes
